In order to graduate from the Computer Technology program at Southern Maine Community College, you must create an ePortfolio that showcases your experience and achievements throughout the program. The ePortfolio is the main assignment of the Senior Seminar course, along with a research project. There are 5 main sections to the portfolio.
Introduction
The introduction contains a brief description of the student. Most students things such as their educational history, their history with computers, and why they chose to attend the computer technology program at SMCC.
Resume
A resume with past work experience, education, and skills relevant to computer technology. For the ePortfolio, the instructor recommended to leave out any contact information.
Artifacts
There are 5 artifacts in the portfolio. The artifacts are the majority of the portfolio. Each artifact shows your experience with a course. It includes a description of the course, a selected work from the course, and a reflection of the course. The selected work is accompanied by a description of the assignment, and the reason that assignment was chosen to represent the course.
Research Project
The other big assignment of the Senior Seminar course is the research project. You need to create 40 minute presentation or demonstration about a topic of your choice. In addition, you need to submit a paper (at least 5 pages) summarizing the project, and documenting your experience researching for the project. In my portfolio, I created a separate page for each. I have a “research project” page that has the slideshow I created for my presentation, and a “research paper” page with my research paper.
Reflection
The final section of the ePortfolio is a comprehensive reflection on the computer technology program as a whole. In my case, I gave a brief description and reflection of each individual course I had taken prior to completing my ePortfolio.
ePortfolio Design
There was no requirement on the design of the ePortfolio, other than it be easy to read, and have a clear navigation structure. The instructor recommended to use a website theme from the Internet. I wanted to create my own design instead. I designed a theme that uses tabs for each section. My original design (unfinished) was rather plain. About halfway through creating the portfolio, I decided to revise it and make it look a little more modern. (Keep in mind that I created this in 2011, so its design is now dated.)
